The Code to Grow Curriculum

Children who are accepted to the program and attend coding camp are also offered an opportunity to be mentored throughout the school year and enroll in our self-guided coding curriculum that teaches them the basics of coding Python. We provide them with the curriculum and mentoring to help them as they work through the online course throughout the school year.

The curriculum is mostly asynchronous, online, and teaches the Python coding language. If you're familiar with the curriculum and are looking to volunteer, this is the section for you. If you're just curious about the curriculum in general, you should read the abstract on the bottom of this page.

The duties of a mentor are as follows:

  • Meet with their student(s) once per weekend, for a 1-2 hour zoom call. This can and likely will be less, but weekly meetings are the worst-case  scenario and you should be able to accomodate them if need be.
  • Teach the student how to use visual studio code (everything else the student might not know, like with git, has been reduced to button presses).
  • On the zoom call, help their student(s) through any roadblocks or challenges they have with their current project.
  • On and/or off the zoom call, certify that the student's code completes the objective.
  • Keep an eye on the feedback pull request during the week for messages from the students, although you can answer these in your own time.
