Each camp session is one week long and camp typically begins the last week of June and ends in early August. We sponsor our students to attend the first two week long sessions of coding camp at Planet Bravo. Typically this is June 24-July 5th depending on the calendar each year. Code to Grow covers the complete cost of camp tuition for each student in the program and there are not fees the student's family is responsible for.
Planet Bravo only provides lunch on the last day of camp each week (pizza for all the kids) and on every other day the students need to bring their own lunches, snacks and water bottles. Code to Grow can provide lunches and snacks each day for our campers at no cost the the students if requested, and those details can be worked out on a student by student basis.
PlanetBravo offers summer camp at 8 different locations in the LA area. Most of our students attend the Manhattan Beach location (located at Manhattan Beach Middle School) and each summer, depending on where our students live we can open up slots in any of the 8 Planet Bravo locations: Beverly Hills, Burbank, Encino, Eagle Rock, Irvine, Manhattan Beach, Mar Vista, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and LAX Westchester.
While many students are able to get rides to and from camp, we do offer rides to and from camp at no cost to the student. We partner with HopSkipDrive to ensure safe rides and can pick up from anywhere in LA, take the student to camp and then take them home after camp if needed. This must be pre-arranged at least 4 weeks before camp starts to ensure availability.
We will work with families who don't have a computer at home to see if perhaps they can borrow one from their child's school (many schools offer loaner computers). Code to Grow does not currently offer loaner computers but we are willing to work with families to see how we can help support their child's passion.
We ask both the family and the student to commit to taking the course seriously and investing time in learning to code. Our mentors are both paid tutors and volunteers and their time is valuable so we want to be sure each student is committed to learning to code.
As this is a needs based program for underprivileged students, we require some evidence of need that reflects household income. If there are documents you can provide for us to review we are comfortable working with you given the access you have to those documents.
We welcome volunteers and are always looking for more people to help us support this cause. We're looking for outreach folks who can help us reach new students, mentors who know how to code and can provide mentorship and guidance to our students, as well as help with our curriculum development. info@codetrogrow.org.
Yes for now it is but we are looking to grow and expand so reach out to us if you are interested in opening up Code To Grow chapters in your region! info@codetogrow.org.
